Axial-Flux vs Radial-Flux: A Guide to Motor Topology

Most motors people encounter are radial-flux — the magnetic flux travels radially between rotor and stator arranged as concentric cylinders. It's a mature, well-understood, and cost-effective topology for the vast majority of applications.

Axial-flux motors arrange the rotor and stator as parallel discs, with flux traveling along the motor's axis. The result is a shorter, wider, pancake-shaped motor that delivers a notably higher power-to-weight ratio — valuable anywhere axial space is constrained but radial space is available.

The trade-off is manufacturing complexity and, typically, higher unit cost. Axial-flux designs make the most sense when weight and envelope genuinely drive the application — think tight installation footprints or weight-sensitive mobile platforms.

We evaluate topology as part of every custom motor engagement rather than defaulting to one architecture, because the best choice is almost always application-specific.
