What Makes a Motor 'Defence-Grade'? Understanding MOD Specifications

Defence and aerospace applications don't just demand a motor that works — they demand a motor that keeps working under shock, vibration, temperature extremes, and years of unpredictable field conditions, with full traceability behind every unit.

Meeting MOD (Ministry of Defence) specifications typically means designing for a documented environmental envelope from day one: vibration and shock testing, extended temperature range operation, and ingress protection appropriate to the platform.

Documentation is as important as the hardware itself. Defence procurement requires material certificates, test reports, and full build traceability — every winding, bearing, and housing accounted for and auditable.

Designing to this standard from the outset, rather than retrofitting a commercial motor, is what allows a build to pass qualification testing the first time.
